One Direction are a British-Irish boy band, consisting of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They finished third on the seventh series of The X Factor. Following The X Factor, the group signed a record contract with Syco Music.

One Direction's debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" was released on 11 September 2011. The single debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number one on 18 September 2011, shifting 153,965 copies, becoming the third fastest selling single of 2011.[1][2]. Their second single, "Gotta Be You", was released on 13 November 2011, which peaked at number three.[3] Their debut album Up All Night was released on 21 November 2011. The album peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, selling 138,631 copies. [4] Up All Night became the fastest-selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011.[5] The became the third biggest selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011. The album became 16th biggest selling album of 2011, with 468,000 copies sold, between the albums first five weeks of release.[6]

History

2010: The X Factor

In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson all applied as solo candidates for the The X Factor, but failed to qualify for the "Boys" category. After suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five were put into a band, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category.[7] After the elimination of F.Y.D., Diva Fever and Belle Amie within four weeks, they were Simon Cowell's last act in the competition. One Direction finished third behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. Immediately after the final, their song "Forever Young", which would have been released if they had won The X Factor, was leaked onto the internet.

2011–present: Up All Night

Following The X Factor, the group signed a £2 million record contract with Syco Music.[8]

One Direction and nine other contestants from the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour from February–April 2011.[9] The tour consisted of multiple stops within the UK and Ireland.

One Direction made an appearance on The Alan Titchmarsh Show on 4 April 2011 and Malik confirmed their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" would be released in June, though it was pushed back to August in order to coincide with the launch of the eighth series of The X Factor,[10] and then again to September. While on the show, One Direction also confirmed they are the new ambassadors for Pokémon.[11] On 29 July, they made an appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man.[12]

They developed their debut album with Savan Kotecha[13] and released their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" on 11 September 2011.[14] The song received its first airplay on 10 August on BBC Radio 1, and broke pre-order sales record for Sony Music.[15] It entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 with first-week sales of 153,965. As of December 2011 the single sold 540,000 copies in the UK.[16] 1 January 2012, it was revealed that 'What Makes You Beautiful' was the 20th biggest-selling single of 2011 on the UK Singles Chart.[17]

One Direction released their second single "Gotta Be You" on 13 November 2011.[18] The single was followed by their debut studio album, Up All Night on 21 November.[19] The album features songs written by Kelly Clarkson and Ed Sheeran.[20] The album became the fastest-selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011, selling 138,631 copies in it's opening week.[21] The album became the third biggest selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011. The album became 16th biggest selling album of 2011, with 468,000 copies sold, between the albums five weeks of release.[22]

The group performed the single for the first time on Red or Black? on 10 September. On 26 September, One Direction announced their debut headline UK tour, set for December 2011 and January 2012.[23] The tour was sold out in minutes of release. [24]

On 9 November, One Direction also revealed that they will be touring the United States with Big Time Rush on February and March 2012.[25]

The group have signed a US record deal with Columbia.[26] Their debut album will be released 20 March 2012 in the United States and Canada.[27][28]

Non-music activities

Books

The first One Direction-licensed book, One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), was released on 17 February 2011.[29] Published by HarperCollins, the book contains personal snaps, unseen photographs and backstage footage both from The X Factor and the X Factor Live Tour, as well as written accounts of every member of the band.[30] The book reached the number one spot on the Sunday Times Bestseller list.[31]

One Direction: The Official Annual 2012, was published on 1 September 2011. The book includes exclusive interviews, up to the minute news and information, and never before seen photos of the band.[32]

On 15 September 2011, One Direction released Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction.[33] Like the other books, it contains exclusive unseen photos of the band on and off stage, along with private captured moments. Dare to Dream was also able to secure the top spot on the Sunday Times Non Fiction Hardback Bestseller list. [34]

Calenders

The group have released there first calender One Direction 2012 Calendar. On 15 December 2011, Amazon.com revealed that One Direction have achieved the top selling calendar of all time surpassing Cheryl Cole's Official Cheryl Cole 2011 Calendar and JLS's Official JLS 2011 Calendar.[35]

Commercial endorsements

One Direction became the brand ambassadors for Pokémon Black and White in April 2011. They starred in a series of television ads, as well as special events performing for and meeting fans.[36]

The band also launched limited edition Nokia C2-02 and Nokia C3-00 phones. They contain exclusive content such as One Direction wallpapers, ringtones, and behind the scenes videos of the band.[37]

Members

Each of the five members applied as solo contestants, but failed to qualify for the Boys category. After a suggestion by guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, the five teens were put into a band, thus qualifying for the Groups category.[38]

Niall Horan

Niall Horan born on September 13, 1993 (1993-09-13) (age 18) is from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland. He was a pupil at Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar, a boys' CBS secondary school.[39] Horan auditioned with "So Sick" and received mixed comments from judges present at his audition, with Louis Walsh in his favor.While two other judges having doubts on whether he was ready to progress in the competition. With three votes out of four he was sent to bootcamp. At bootcamp, he sang "Champagne Supernova" before being rejected and put into One Direction. Horan also plays the guitar.

Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik born on January 12, 1993 (1993-01-12) (age 19) is from West Lane Baildon, Bradford, UK.[40] He is a pupil at Tong High School, a state comprehensive school.[41] He is of Pakistani descent. His audition was initially not broadcast, but was shown after the series ended on companion show The Xtra Factor. Malik was noted for becoming nervous in bootcamp, and when he was told he had to dance, he decided to remain backstage, effectively running the risk of elimination. Cowell noticed Malik missing from the dance routine and went backstage and convinced him to return.[42] Malik dated fellow X Factor contestant, Rebecca Ferguson which caused controversy because of the six year age difference. The relationship ended after 4 months together. In November 2011 Ferguson stated in an interview: "Me and Zayn just grew apart. I wish him all the best." [43]

Liam Payne

Liam Payne born on August 29, 1993 (1993-08-29) (age 18), from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, UK, is a music technology student at City of Wolverhampton College, a Further Education College.[44] Payne had auditioned in 2008 to The X Factor's fifth series when he was 14 and reached judges' houses, but Cowell thought he was not ready for the competition and asked him to come back in two years.[44] This time Payne auditioned singing "Cry Me a River" and received a standing ovation from the audience and Simon Cowell.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles born on February 1, 1994 (1994-02-01) (age 18) is from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, UK and is a pupil at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, a state comprehensive school.[45] Styles was the lead singer for the band White Eskimo with band members lead guitarist Haydn Morris, bass guitarist Nick Clough and drummer Will Sweeny.[45] Styles auditioned with "Isn't She Lovely" and received positive comments from two of the three judges present at his audition, with Louis Walsh having doubts on whether he was ready to progress in the competition. At bootcamp, he sang "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" before being rejected and put into One Direction.

Louis Tomlinson

Louis Tomlinson born on December 24, 1991 (1991-12-24) (age 20)[46] is from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, UK. He was a sixth form student at Hall Cross School, a state comprehensive school and previously a pupil at The Hayfield School, a state comprehensive school, before that.[47] Tomlinson auditioned with "Hey There Delilah",with three votes out of three judges present at his audition he was sent to bootcamp. At bootcamp, he sang "Make You Feel My Love" before being rejected and put into One Direction.

One Direction UK Tour

On 27 September 2011, One Direction announced their first headline UK tour,set for December 2011 and January 2012. The tour was sold out in minutes of release. [48][49]
